Again, Naruto is considered by many fans and critics to be one of the best Shonen series of all time. Naruto is not a show that should be rushed through in order to get to Shippuden. (If you are generally a fan of anime theme songs, however, definitely give each of the series’ intro and outro tunes a listen at some point, as the anime features an impressive catalog of Japanese rock songs from some of the genre’s best artists.)ĭo not get the wrong idea, however.

And, if you are watching the series on Netflix, the service gives you the ability to easily skip the recap and even the theme song with just one click. This usually cuts each episode down into 15-to-20 minute episodes, as opposed to full 30-minute excursions. These refreshers are helpful for those who are watching the series sporadically, but binge watchers can skip right past these and save a considerable amount of time. Sure, that is still a ton of episodes, but that cuts out quite a bit of time for those looking to get to Shippuden sooner rather than later.Īdditionally, Naruto features rather lengthy recaps (which are actually just several minutes of the previously seen footage) at the beginning of nearly every episode. While there is a debate among fans as to which filler episodes are worth watching, those looking to streamline the experience and see only the core story will find viewing just the 129 canon episodes much more manageable than the entire 220. That is a whopping 41 percent, which is considered to be quite high as compared to other anime. In fact, 91 episodes in the original series are reported to be filler according to Anime Filler List. Naruto, as well as Shippuden, both have a considerable amount of filler. That being said, despite Naruto’s daunting 220 episodes, the series becomes a lot more manageable if you skip the filler episodes. Not to mention, Naruto is simply regarded as one of the best anime ever made, garnering a must-watch recommendation in its own right. Shippuden is very much a continuation of the Naruto story – just with a three-year time skip in between. Naruto sets up most of the plot and characters that make up much of Shippuden’s story.

But is this move advised? Would Shippuden even make sense without its predecessor?ĭo you need to watch Naruto before watching Naruto: Shippuden? Yes. With hundreds of episodes of both Naruto and subsequent series Naruto: Shippuden, it might be tempting to skip the original series altogether.
